What is a 'carbon footprint'?

What does 'carbon footprint' mean?

Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere as a result of your activities.

Whether it be the car you drive, the gas you use to heat your home or the Sunday dinner you eat, all your activities have a carbon footprint.

While it might not seem like you personally create many emissions, your carbon footprint takes into account all the energy it costs to produce any product you consume.

Basically, your carbon footprint is a way of measuring the impact your choices have on the environment.

What is IEG's carbon footprint?

As a company, IEG is carefully measuring its carbon footprint using an international standard carbon reporting model. Our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reporting conforms to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and ISO14064.

We are analysing all of our emissions across our business operations (Scope 1 and Scope 2). We also calculate a number of parts of our full value chain (Scope 3 accounting), including the gas that we distribute to our customers. Over time we shall expand the Scope 3 emissions we report so that we can to assess the exact impact we are having on emissions.

Measuring and reporting on our emissions helps us to identify areas where we can reduce our carbon footprint, from the lights we use in our offices, to the boats that transport our gas shipments. We are also diversifying the products and services we offer to include transitioning from supplying fossil fuel gas to renewable gas (such as Biogas) and embracing innovative energy saving solutions such as Smart Home technology to support our customers to significantly reduce their carbon footprint and the islands of Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man in reaching Net Zero by 2050.

We're committed to reporting our carbon footprint every year, so everyone can see the progress we're making towards our goal of becoming a Net Zero business by 2050.

Can you measure your own carbon footprint?

The short answer is - yes! There are many carbon footprint calculators online, which you can use for free.

One of the best ones to try is WWF's carbon footprint calculator.

Give it a try and see how you could cut down on the emissions produced from your diet, your transportation habits, or your energy use.
